“Family consists of two or more people who live together and are related by such enduring factors as birth, marriage, adoption, or long-term mutual commitment.”
“Culture is the defined values, traditions, and symbol systems of a long-standing social group.”
“Community includes the local neighborhood and surrounding areas, which together create a bridge from the family to the outside world.”
Our families attend to our basic needs; they provide us with food, clothes, and shelter. Families encourage certain behaviors and beliefs, which is an important aspect of a child's development. Families encourage behaviors that are accepted by society. The heads of families model and teach certain behaviors that appropriate during certain situations. In the early years of living, children spend that majority of their time with family members. Children learn certain behaviors and learn certain values that the particular family believes in.
Every family has a culture or belief system that they follow. As they grow up, children will learn these beliefs from their family members. Cultural groups have differences in everyday life events. Some cultures mealtime is different from others, whom and where is different amongst different cultures. The division of responsibility is also different between different cultures. Some cultures have stay at home moms and the dad is the breadwinner of the house, and in other cultures both parents work and make money for the family. Social practices are also another difference. The way children play and the way the marital partners interact is different from culture to culture. These differences impact child development in many ways. For one, when children meet another child from a different cultural background they learn from each other.
A community is where children get to interact socially with other children and adults. It could be anyone that is not a part of his or her family. Children that interact with other children from their community will learn from each other. This is inevitable. Children will learn new behaviors when interacting with new children. This is something that cannot be stopped because in school children interact with other children and they all have something new to teach each other, whether they leaned it from their family, culture, or community.
